The world’s fashion capital, Paris, saw style come alive in all its elements yet again in the recently concluded Paris Fashion Week, 2012. The Paris Fashion Week Autumn-Winter collection for 2012 featured design houses the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Valentino, Elie Saab, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Christian Dior and more! Here are some of my favourites and a look at how to make these inspired styles your own.
Coats and jackets aboard the ultimate fashion express!
The porters lined up to receive the models as the Louis Vuitton collection chugged stylishly into the Paris Fashion Week. Yes, you heard it right. This Louis Vuitton show was not just about catwalks! It was all about entertainment and extravagance with a mind-blowing Pre-World War 1 aristocratic theme. The fashionable travellers descended from the Louis Vuitton Express, a train carriage built especially for the show. The collection simply exuded elegance with timeless fashion at its best.
The Marc Jacobs’ collection for Louis Vuitton was distinctively vintage and possessed great panache. Coats and jackets with high waists accentuated the silhouettes and hats lengthened them. Some were paired with ankle-length trousers with slightly flared hems, and others with shin-length flared skirts.
Coats are absolute must-haves in your Autumn-Winter wardrobe! Classic cuts look quite sophisticated, but you can wear your coats in a more contemporary style with these beautiful pieces from Zara. Go with your animal instincts and don a seductive snakeskin prints trench coat or a chic double-button trench coat’s that’s up to knee-length or shorter.

Dresses in maximum volume, mushroom style!
Molto hand cutting, hand-placing and dip dying were the key ingredients in the creation of mushroomy magic from Alexander McQueen. Painstakingly created over weeks, the collection featured over-sized dresses in fabrics infused with fur. But there was nothing heavy about it. The creations were surprisingly light, airy and full of life!
Throw out what’s subtle this Autumn-Winter and ring in the flamboyance of bright fur layers! There are several interesting ways to bring out your warm winter style. Go all out with this classic, long, pull on style leg warmer in faux fur that I found at ASOS. Keep your feet warm in style with leather ankle boots which feature fur cuffs. Accessorize for the Autumn-Winter ahead with a rich blue fur scarf lends to a bold attitude!

The dark seduction of slim silhouettes
It was designer Stefano Pilato’s last show with Yves Saint Laurent, and he parted with a creation that oozed glamour at its dark, seductive best! The Yves Saint Laurent range was predominantly black with electrifying jolts of white and purple. Chainmail dresses (inspired by inter-linked metal rings to form a mesh, as seen in armours), narrow silhouettes, slim high-waist trousers and lush leather tops with roomy elbow length sleeves defined the uncompromisingly hard-edged YSL collection.
Have you been stepping out in clothes that don’t really reflect your personality? Well, it’s time to let your clothes do the talking! Opt for muted colours with a dash of the bold and reflect absolute confidence. Put together an outfit complete with edgy cuts and deep colours. Clothes that accentuate and lengthen the silhouette are good contenders for your wardrobe. Easy and versatile, the cotton-elastene Blue Label slim-fit jeans from Ralph Lauren looks truly chic in black. Check out the lustrous cotton-silk blend Black Label Charolette dress from Ralph Lauren. When it comes to jackets choose ones with ample arm space like this one from Nadia rendered in lightweight wool with classic feminine details.

Strict elegance and feminine cuts
Valentino designers Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri brought out a collection that juxtaposed strict elegance with a graceful touch of feminine frills. Clean-cut leather capes, tunics, trench coats, skirts and dresses – they were all there! Floor-length gowns featured a palette of black, nude, scarlet and ivory. Lacework also made an appearance paired with long sleeves and ruffled skirts.
Make these styles your own! These two dresses from Zara imbibe styles seen from this collection – a long-sleeve black teardrop tunic dress which exudes elegance in straight cuts, and a lacy white embroidered dress with a segmented waistline. You can also wear a navy blue Van Heusen dress made of a cotton-elastene blend. Ooze feminine grace and look sharp in this cap-sleeves dress from Myntra.

Glamorous red-carpet gowns
The Elie Saab collection featured a bevy of red carpet gowns in a gorgeous array of sequined, metallic and sheer varieties. The collection also showcased a series of ladylike skirts, suits, loose-cut trousers and fur coats. Shimmer and laser-cut details were the highlight of this show with multiple colour trends including black, tan, green, silver, grey and beige.
I logged on to Ralph Lauren and discovered impressive selections in sequins and metallic finishes – a sequined V-neck long gown in navy blue, a sleek metallic floor-length white gown, and an crossover sequin neckline gown featuring a sweeping Georgette skirt. All three pieces are excellent choices as evening wear, exuding absolute elegance.
